Choosing the right nickel alloy tube

This list is organised by what the tube is actually built for — a heat exchanger and steam-generator perspective, not just the alloy family.

Alloy UNS Seamless Spec Pick it when
Nickel 201 N02201 B163 Caustic evaporator tube above 315°C. Low carbon avoids graphitisation at temperature.
Inconel 600 N06600 B166 Nuclear steam generator tube, or any exchanger where chloride stress corrosion cracking rules out stainless.
    Inconel 601 N06601 B167 Furnace-mounted heat exchanger tube running above 1150°C.
Inconel 625 N06625 B444 Offshore heat exchanger and umbilical tube where high strength and corrosion resistance are both needed.
    Incoloy 800H / 800HT N08810 / N08811 B163 Reformer and pyrolysis furnace tube running sustained above 600°C.
Incoloy 825 N08825 B423 Sulphuric acid cooler tube, sour gas heat exchangers.
Monel 400 N04400 B165 Seawater condenser tube, particularly where hydrofluoric acid may be present in the process stream.
Hastelloy C276 N10276 B622 Heat exchanger tube in a mixed acid stream where you are not certain of the exact fluid composition.
Hastelloy B2 N10665 B622 Pure hydrochloric acid heat exchanger tube in reducing conditions only.
Alloy 20 N08020 B729 Sulphuric acid process tube across a range of concentrations and temperatures.

If your service condition is milder than these — general cooling water, moderate chlorides — a
    316L or 254 SMO tube
will do the job at a fraction of the cost.

    Sizes and wall thicknesses

Nickel alloy tube follows the same OD and BWG dimensional system as stainless tube. Density varies significantly by alloy, so use the correct value below rather than a single blanket constant.

    Alloy Density (g/cm³)
    Nickel 200 / 201 8.90
    Inconel 600 8.47
    Inconel 625 8.44
    Incoloy 800 / 800H / 800HT 7.94
    Incoloy 825 8.14
    Monel 400 8.80
    Hastelloy C276 8.89
    Alloy 20 8.08

Weight formula: kg per metre = (OD minus WT) x WT x density x 0.00000785, both dimensions in mm.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does nickel alloy tube need so many different ASTM specifications?

Each alloy family has its own tube spec because the manufacturing route and acceptance criteria differ — a Hastelloy tube and an Incoloy tube are not tested the same way. B163, B166, B167, B444 and B622 between them cover the seamless side of this range; the welded side uses a different set of numbers again.

What is the difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 tube?

Carbon content. Nickel 200 allows up to 0.15% carbon, Nickel 201 is held to 0.02%. Above 315°C, the higher carbon in Nickel 200 can precipitate as graphite at the grain boundaries. Nickel 201 is the correct choice above that temperature.

Can nickel alloy tube be U-bent for a heat exchanger?

Yes, on request, once the tube sheet layout and bend schedule are confirmed. Bend radius requirements vary by alloy and should be checked before finalising the tube sheet drawing.
