Choosing the right stainless steel grade

Most piping failures we hear about are not manufacturing defects. They are grade selection mistakes, usually chlorides attacking a grade that was never meant to handle them. The table below is the shortcut our own team uses when a customer describes their service condition.

PREN stands for pitting resistance equivalent number. It is calculated from chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content, and it gives you a quick way to compare how well a grade will hold up against chloride pitting. Higher is better.

Grade UNS PREN (approx.) Pick it when
304 / 304L S30400 / S30403 18 to 20 General plant, food and dairy, potable water, nitric acid. No chlorides.
316 / 316L S31600 / S31603 24 to 26 Chlorides are present but mild. Coastal air, chlorinated water, most chemical service.
317L S31703 29 to 31 316L is corroding faster than expected. Higher molybdenum buys margin.
321 / 321H S32100 / S32109 18 to 20 Welded assemblies that then run hot. Titanium stabilisation stops carbide precipitation.
    347 / 347H S34700 / S34709 18 to 20 Same problem as 321, but you need more creep strength. Niobium stabilised.
    310 / 310S S31000 / S31008 24 to 26 Furnace and kiln service. Sustained oxidation resistance to roughly 1050 C.
904L N08904 34 to 36 Sulphuric and phosphoric acid. Copper addition helps in reducing conditions.
254 SMO S31254 42 to 44 Seawater, brine, bleach plants. Where 316L pits within months.

    Sizes and wall thicknesses

Wall thicknesses follow ASME B36.19M for stainless schedules and B36.10M for the heavier walls. These are our fastest moving sizes. Anything outside this can be sourced, though lead times run longer.

NPS OD (mm) SCH 5S SCH 10S SCH 40 SCH 80
    1/2″ 21.3 1.65 2.11 2.77 3.73
    1″ 33.4 1.65 2.77 3.38 4.55
    2″ 60.3 1.65 2.77 3.91 5.54
    3″ 88.9 2.11 3.05 5.49 7.62
    4″ 114.3 2.11 3.05 6.02 8.56
    6″ 168.3 2.77 3.40 7.11 10.97
    8″ 219.1 2.77 3.76 8.18 12.70
    10″ 273.1 3.40 4.19 9.27 15.09
    12″ 323.9 3.96 4.57 10.31 17.48

All wall thicknesses in millimetres. To work out weight, use this: kg per metre = (OD minus WT) x WT x 0.0248, with both dimensions in mm. A 6″ SCH 40 pipe works out to about 28.4 kg per metre.

    Frequently asked questions

Which stainless steel grade should I use for my pipeline?

Start with the fluid and the temperature. For general plant service, potable water, food and dairy with no chlorides present, 304 or 304L is enough. Once chlorides enter the picture, move to 316 or 316L. If 316L is still corroding, step up to 317L or 904L. For seawater and brine, you need 254 SMO or a super duplex grade. For furnace and kiln work above 900 C, use 310S.

What is the difference between stainless steel pipe and stainless steel tube?

Pipe is ordered by nominal pipe size and schedule, and it is built to carry fluid, so the inside diameter is what the designer cares about. Tube is ordered by exact outside diameter and wall thickness, held to tighter tolerances, and it is used in heat exchangers, boilers, instrumentation and mechanical work. A 2 inch pipe and a 2 inch tube have different dimensions and are not interchangeable.

Should I specify seamless or welded stainless steel pipe?

Below about 8 inch the price difference is small, so seamless is worth taking. Above 12 inch, seamless gets costly and hard to source, and EFW pipe to ASTM A358 Class 1 carries the same joint quality factor of 1.00 under ASME B31.3. Seamless remains the right choice for high pressure, cyclic loading and sour service.

What is PREN and why does it matter?

PREN is the pitting resistance equivalent number, calculated as chromium plus 3.3 times molybdenum plus 16 times nitrogen, using the percentages in the alloy. It gives a single figure to compare chloride pitting resistance across grades. 304 sits around 18 to 20, 316 around 24 to 26, and 254 SMO around 42 to 44. It is a comparison tool, not a design limit.

Do you supply mill test certificates?

Yes. Every consignment ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing heat number, chemical analysis and mechanical test results, traceable back to the producing mill. Type 3.2 certification with third party endorsement is available where your contract requires it.

What is the price of stainless steel pipe per kg?

Stainless pricing moves with nickel and chromium on the London Metal Exchange, sometimes week to week, so we do not publish a fixed rate. Price also depends on grade, form, size, schedule, mill origin and quantity. Send your requirement and we will quote against live stock.

What is your minimum order quantity?

There is no fixed minimum for stock items, and we handle both single length trial orders and full container loads. For sizes we have to procure from the mill, minimum quantities apply and we will tell you what they are when we quote.
