Choosing the right carbon steel grade

This is the shortcut we use when a customer describes the job rather than quoting a spec number.

    Grade Standard Pick it when
A106 Grade B ASTM A106 General process and refinery piping running hot, up to about 427°C. The default choice for plant piping in elevated-temperature service.
A53 Grade B ASTM A53 Structural and low-pressure utility lines where A106’s tighter chemistry is not required. Cheaper, less commonly used for pressure piping.
A333 Grade 6 ASTM A333 Low-temperature service down to minus 45°C. Impact tested — specify this for cold climates or any line that could see sub-zero conditions.
API 5L X42 to X60 PSL1/2 API 5L Standard-pressure gas and oil transmission pipelines. PSL2 adds mandatory impact testing and tighter carbon equivalent limits over PSL1.
API 5L X65 to X80 PSL1/2 API 5L High-pressure, long-distance transmission where a thinner wall at higher yield strength cuts total steel weight and freight cost.
API 5L LSAW / SAW API 5L Large diameters, typically above 20″, where seamless manufacturing is not practical or cost-effective.
API 5L IBR Indian Boiler Regulations Boiler and pressure vessel piping supplied into India, where IBR certification is a regulatory requirement, not optional.
ASTM A671 / A672 ASTM A671 / A672 Electric-fusion-welded pipe from plate, for moderate-temperature, high-pressure service — boiler feed lines, refinery process piping. Not the same product family as API 5L transmission pipe.

    Sizes and wall thicknesses

Carbon steel schedules follow ASME B36.10M. Density is 7.85 g/cm³: kg per metre = (OD minus WT) x WT x 0.02466, both dimensions in mm.

NPS OD (mm) SCH 40 SCH 80 SCH 160
    2″ 60.3 3.91 5.54 8.74
    4″ 114.3 6.02 8.56 13.49
    6″ 168.3 7.11 10.97 18.26
    8″ 219.1 8.18 12.70 23.01
    12″ 323.9 10.31 17.48 33.32

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between A106 and API 5L pipe?

A106 is process piping steel, sold by nominal size and schedule for plant and refinery use. API 5L is pipeline transmission steel, sold by grade (X42 to X80) that specifies minimum yield strength for long-distance gas and oil pipelines. They are not interchangeable specifications even where dimensions overlap.

When do I need LSAW or SAW instead of seamless pipe?

Above roughly 20 inch NB, seamless pipe becomes difficult to source and expensive. LSAW (longitudinal weld) and SAW (spiral weld) are the standard manufacturing routes for large-diameter transmission pipe and carry the same API 5L pressure ratings when properly qualified.

    Do you supply IBR-certified pipe?

Yes. IBR certification is required for boiler and pressure vessel piping supplied within India and involves third-party inspection at the mill. Confirm this requirement at enquiry stage as it affects lead time.
