Each length is supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate and a traceable heat number to ensure material authenticity and quality assurance.

Difference Between Stainless Steel Tubes and Pipes

Although stainless steel tubes and pipes may share the same material grade, they are different products designed for specific applications. Stainless Steel Pipes are generally specified by nominal size and schedule, while Stainless Steel Tubes are ordered according to their exact outside diameter and wall thickness.

Stainless Steel Tubes require tighter dimensional tolerances because they are commonly used in precision applications such as heat exchangers, condensers, boilers, and instrumentation systems. Accurate dimensions ensure proper fitting inside tube sheets and connections. Therefore, a 1-inch pipe and a 1-inch tube are not interchangeable and must be selected according to the required application.

Our Stainless Steel Seamless Tubes to ASTM A213 are the standard choice for heat exchanger and boiler bundles. Our Stainless Steel Welded Tubes to ASTM A249 are drawn and bright-annealed after welding, which gives a smooth bore for good heat transfer and is why they are accepted alongside seamless tube in most heat-exchanger specifications. For instrumentation and hydraulic lines, we also stock ASTM A269 general corrosion-resisting tube.

    What we hold in stock

Tube tolerances are tighter than pipe tolerances because the tube has to seat correctly in a tube sheet or ferrule fitting. That is the main thing to flag on a drawing when you move from a pipe spec to a tube spec.

OUR RANGE OF STAINLESS STEEL TUBES

Choosing the right stainless tube grade

The grade logic is the same chemistry as pipe, but where you land depends on what is on the shell side and tube side of your exchanger, not just the process fluid.

Grade UNS PREN (approx.) Pick it when
304 / 304L S30400 / S30403 18 to 20 Steam and condensate service, food and dairy heat exchangers, no chlorides on either side.
316 / 316L S31600 / S31603 24 to 26 Cooling water with mild chlorides, most chemical plant heat exchangers. The default for shell-and-tube units.
317L S31703 29 to 31 316L tube bundles are pitting on the water side faster than expected.
321 / 321H S32100 / S32109 18 to 20 Superheater and reheater tube that runs hot after welding. Titanium stabilisation stops carbide precipitation at the weld.
347 / 347H S34700 / S34709 18 to 20 Same duty as 321 tube, higher creep strength needed. Niobium stabilised, common in boiler superheater bundles.
    310 / 310S S31000 / S31008 24 to 26 Radiant tube and furnace-mounted heat exchangers running to around 1050°C.
904L N08904 34 to 36 Sulphuric acid coolers and heat exchangers in reducing acid duty.

If your tube bundle sees seawater or brine on the cooling side, standard austenitic grades will not hold up. See our
    nickel alloy tube range
for Titanium, 90/10 Cupro-Nickel or Monel options instead.

    Sizes and wall thicknesses

Tube size is specified by outside diameter and wall thickness directly, not by nominal size and schedule the way pipe is. Wall thickness is commonly called out in BWG (Birmingham Wire Gauge) on heat-exchanger drawings, so we have listed the mm equivalent alongside.

OD (mm) OD (inch) 16 BWG (mm) 14 BWG (mm) 12 BWG (mm)
    12.7 1/2″ 1.65 2.11 2.77
    15.88 5/8″ 1.65 2.11 2.77
    19.05 3/4″ 1.65 2.11 2.77
    25.4 1″ 1.65 2.11 2.77
    31.75 1 1/4″ 1.65 2.11 2.77
    38.1 1 1/2″ 1.65 2.11 2.77

Wall thickness in BWG stays constant across most OD sizes for a given gauge — unlike pipe schedule, where wall thickness changes with size. To convert to weight: kg per metre = (OD minus WT) x WT x 0.0248, both dimensions in mm.

    Industries we supply

Our stainless tube goes into shell-and-tube heat exchangers, condensers, boiler and superheater bundles, instrumentation and hydraulic lines, and sanitary process lines for food, dairy and pharmaceutical plants. The same client base we supply in pipe — Shell, Saudi Aramco, ONGC, ADNOC, Qatar Petroleum, Petrofac and Kuwait Oil Company — also draws tube from us for their heat-exchanger and instrumentation packages.

    FAQ

What is the difference between stainless steel pipe and tube?

Pipe is ordered by nominal pipe size and schedule, built to carry fluid, so the inside diameter is what matters to the designer. Tube is ordered by exact outside diameter and wall thickness, held to tighter tolerances, and used in heat exchangers, boilers, instrumentation and mechanical work. A 1 inch pipe and a 1 inch tube are different sizes and are not interchangeable on a bill of materials.

Should I specify seamless or welded tube for a heat exchanger?

Both are accepted in most heat-exchanger codes when the welded tube is bright-annealed after welding, which A249 requires. Seamless is still preferred for the highest-pressure or most critical bundles. For general shell-and-tube service, welded A249 tube is widely used and costs less.

What does BWG mean on a tube drawing?

Birmingham Wire Gauge, a thickness numbering system used on most heat-exchanger and condenser drawings instead of a direct millimetre callout. A lower BWG number means a thicker wall — 12 BWG is thicker than 16 BWG. We can supply either BWG or direct mm specification.

Do you supply mill test certificates?

Yes. Every consignment ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing heat number, chemical analysis and mechanical test results. Type 3.2 with third-party endorsement is available where your contract requires it.
