OUR RANGE OF ALLOY STEEL PIPES
Choosing the right alloy steel grade
P5 to P91 are selected by service temperature and required creep strength. AISI 4130 is selected for a completely different reason — treat it as a separate decision, not a sixth option on the same list.
| Grade | Composition | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| P11 | 1 to 1.5% Cr, 0.5% Mo | Moderate elevated temperature, up to about 540°C. Entry point of the chrome-moly family. |
| P22 | 2 to 2.5% Cr, 1% Mo | Boiler superheater and reheader piping, power plant service up to about 580°C. The most widely used grade in this range. |
| P5 | 4 to 6% Cr, 0.5% Mo | Refinery and catalytic cracking service where higher chromium is needed for oxidation resistance, up to about 600°C. |
| P9 | 8 to 10% Cr, 1% Mo | Above P5’s range where more chromium is needed for oxidation resistance at similar or slightly higher temperatures. |
| P91 | 9% Cr, 1% Mo, plus V, Nb, N | Ultra-supercritical power plant service up to about 600 to 650°C. Higher allowable stress than P22 means a thinner wall for the same rating — the grade to specify when wall thickness and weight matter as much as temperature. |
| AISI 4130 | Cr-Mo, heat-treatable | Not a temperature-service question. Choose this for strength-to-weight ratio in structural or mechanical applications — drill pipe, hydraulic lines, tubing that needs to be heat-treated after fabrication. |
Sizes and wall thicknesses
P5 to P91 alloy steel pipe follows the same ASME B36.10M schedules as carbon steel. Density across the P-grades is close to 7.75 to 7.85 g/cm³: kg per metre = (OD minus WT) x WT x 0.0246, both dimensions in mm.
| NPS | OD (mm) | SCH 40 | SCH 80 | SCH 160 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2″ | 60.3 | 3.91 | 5.54 | 8.74 |
| 4″ | 114.3 | 6.02 | 8.56 | 13.49 |
| 6″ | 168.3 | 7.11 | 10.97 | 18.26 |
| 8″ | 219.1 | 8.18 | 12.70 | 23.01 |
