Nickel alloys are specified when stainless and duplex steel are not enough — hydrochloric acid, wet chlorine, caustic soda above 100°C, or sustained service above 600°C. Each alloy family is built for a different failure mode: the Hastelloy range resists the harshest acids in both oxidising and reducing conditions, Inconel holds up at extreme temperatures and against chloride stress corrosion cracking, Incoloy resists carburising and oxidising furnace atmospheres, Monel is built for seawater and hydrofluoric acid, and Alloy 20 was developed specifically for sulphuric acid.
Our Nickel Alloy Seamless Pipes are manufactured to ASTM B161 / B163 / B167 / B444 / B407 / B622 / B729, and our Nickel Alloy Welded Pipes follow ASTM B358 / B464 / B619 / B704 / B725 / B751. Choosing the right nickel alloy
Nickel alloys are not ranked on one scale the way stainless grades are compared on PREN. Each family was developed for a different attack mechanism — acid type, temperature, or oxidising versus reducing conditions. Picking the wrong family here is expensive, so this is the shortcut our team uses when a customer describes the service condition.

When you actually need a nickel alloy
Nickel alloys cost significantly more than stainless or duplex steel, so we do not recommend them unless the service condition genuinely requires it. These are the cases where a nickel alloy is the right call, not an oversell:
— Hastelloy B2 in reducing conditions, Hastelloy C276 or C22 if oxidising contaminants are present.
— Hastelloy C276 or C22.
— Nickel 200 below 315°C, Nickel 201 above it.
— Incoloy 800H or 800HT.
— Incoloy 825 or Inconel 625.
— Monel 400 or Inconel 625.
Tell us the fluid, concentration and temperature and we will recommend the most economical grade that actually holds up, even if that means quoting stainless instead of nickel.
Sizes and wall thicknesses
Wall thicknesses follow the same geometric standard (ASME B36.10M) regardless of material — a 6″ SCH 40 pipe has the same outside diameter and wall thickness whether it is carbon steel or Inconel 625. What changes is the weight, because nickel alloy densities vary more than stainless grades do.
